New Puppy Checklist: Everything You Need in the First 30 Days

The first 30 days with a new puppy are simultaneously the most exciting and most chaotic of your life as a pet owner. You're sleep-deprived, your puppy is chewing everything in reach, and you're googling "is it normal if my puppy" approximately 40 times a day.

This checklist covers what you actually need — broken down by category and prioritised by urgency — so you can focus on the puppy instead of the shopping list.

Before They Come Home (Week 0)

These are the absolute essentials that need to be in place before your puppy arrives.

Sleeping Setup

Puppies sleep 16–18 hours a day. A dedicated, comfortable sleep space is essential from day one. For crate training (strongly recommended), line the crate with soft bedding and add a worn t-shirt so it smells like you.

Soft Warm Pet Bed or Heated Donut Dog Bed — the self-heating donut is especially good for anxious puppies who calm faster with the enclosed-wall design.

Food and Water Bowls

Two bowls minimum — one for food, one for water. Stainless steel or ceramic is easier to clean than plastic and doesn't harbour bacteria in surface scratches.

Double Dog Food & Water Bowl — side-by-side stainless steel set, dishwasher safe.

Collar, ID Tag, and Lead

A collar with an ID tag (name + your phone number) is legally required in most regions and practically essential the moment your puppy is outside. For puppies, start with a soft flat collar — no choke chains or slip leads at this stage.

For walking, a Y-shaped harness is significantly better for puppies than a collar — it distributes pressure across the chest rather than the throat, protecting the developing trachea.

Chew Toys (Multiple)

Puppies chew because they're teething, because they're curious, and because it's fun. If you don't give them appropriate things to chew, they'll find their own — and you won't like their choices.

Have at least 3–4 different textures available: rubber, fabric, rope, and crinkle. Rotate them to maintain novelty.

First Week

Vet Appointment

Book within the first week even if your puppy came with a health certificate. Your vet will confirm vaccination status, set up a deworming and flea prevention schedule, and give you a baseline health assessment.

Grooming Basics

Even short-haired puppies benefit from regular brushing to establish grooming as a normal, positive experience. The Dog Shampoo Silicone Bath Brush makes bath time significantly more positive for puppies who are nervous about water.

Dental Care (Start Early)

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in adult dogs — and the habits you establish as a puppy determine the outcome. Start with a finger toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste from week one.

Pet Finger Toothbrush — silicone, 360° cleaning surface.

First Month

Carrier or Travel Bag

Essential for vet visits, public transport, and travel. For puppies under 6kg, a soft-sided carrier bag is the most versatile option — it doubles as a safe space they can retreat to at home.

Pet Backpack Carrier — breathable mesh panels, S and L sizes.

Enrichment and Mental Stimulation

A bored puppy is a destructive puppy. Introduce enrichment toys in the first month to build the habit early.

Start with a Pet Treat Feeder Toy fed at mealtime and a Carrot Dog Snuffle Mat for pre-nap winding down.

Weather Gear

Depending on your climate and breed: a Dog Winter Coat for wet walks, or a Summer Breathable Dog Vest for hot climates.

Things You Don't Need Right Away (But Will Want Eventually)

  • Slow feeder bowl — introduce around week 4 once they're settled into feeding routines
  • Smart pet feeder — relevant once you're leaving them alone for longer periods
  • Paw print kit — do this at 8–12 weeks before they grow too fast
  • Formal training classes — most start from 12–16 weeks post-vaccination
